Tyre NOT Monitored

Having fun replacing Tyre Pressure Sensors on my car.

Had all 4 valves changed (these were complete valves - cheap ebay deal!!!). Unfortunately I found one failing after a 50+ miles (same as previous TPS) and put it down to a bad battery.

Just installed a replacement and at first the system claimed the pressure was wrong but after after 30 miles it is no longer monitoring (I did have the old valve in the car). Usually they pick up and settle down after 20 (I have now driven over 80 miles with no change and have removed the old loose valve).

How to I get the TPS system to re-detect the 'new' valve? Hoping to do my MOT tomorrow!!!!!

Thanks
Dave

Hi Dave, I have had a fair few problems with TPMS over the last three years. On my old XFR, I used to get "Tyre not monitored" when driving in heavy rain on the motorway. Would typically clear itself after 1) the rain reduced or 2) restarting the car (like a petrol stop) 3) after 30 mins or so. This happened 4 -5 times over a winter period. Finally, I got a warning on the front offside, then 10 mins later, rear offside and front offside, then rear nearside and then front nearside. The display went from one wheel to the other. I booked it in and told them to NOT change the valves, but look at the Central Unit. They replaced it under warranty and it was fine after that.

Like you say, when I change to winter tyres/wheels it takes a few miles before they synch up and are OK. However, I noticed that swapping back to the original wheels there was no synch delay, so maybe it "remembers" the original codes.

If you have changed the valves and still have an issue, I suspect the central unit needs replacing. Good luck.

Thanks John - I hope not!

Of course when it was under warranty I reckon they just reset everything....cheapest option which worked for a while.

The main reason I bought this car was because it had TPS - I now know its not worth the money or hassle and wouldnt recommend it to anyone - other cars implement it in a much better and useful way giving accurate and reliable readings.

Fingers crossed......expecting I'll need to go back for a 're-test' as I wont get the sensor working inthe distance/time I have :-(

Is there a way of resetting the system - either via the menu or using ODBII?

Just spoken to the tyre fitter - apparently when fitting new TPS device they sometimes have to inflate the tyre to 60~70 psi to activate the battery and then drive for a short time followed by lowering the pressure to the correct level once its picked up!

It passed its MOT ..... Not sure if it flashed up or not. Doubtful as it usually takes 50 miles.

The TPMS valve stems tend to be very reliable, the same design is used by several companies. Jags integration of it to the infotainment system is rather poor unfortunately. Myself and a few others use aftermarket systems as our cars weren't fitted with it, and so far there's been no issues.

I understand other manufactures use a lot more of the available functionality. Wouldn't be happy if I'd paid for it as an option on a new car!

Unfortunately it's only the valves that are a cheap fix.....

TPMS became a standard feature on MY 15 cars (I believe for all 20" wheels, not sure about smaller ones). I would like to get actual pressure values, but all you get is a warning when pressure drops below 26 psi. However with the low profile tyres, it is not easy to determine visually if they are low or not, so TPMS is needed.

Yes 26psi is the trigger point - useless in my view. A 20" low profile tyre is soon wrecked if run near that tyre pressure for too long. They did save me when I had a blow out - seriously....I knew I had an issue and the TPS confirmed I should stop quickly and save my wheel - luckily I did :)

Mark,
Be good if there was an aftermarket unit that could pick up on existing TPS valves ....especially as I've just replaced all mine! :-D I understand they put out all the info...just Jag chose not to use it! Frequency is known and they are I expect an industry wide standard
